Inlays and onlays
Inlays and onlays are a type of tooth restoration that grant a stronger reparative solution to tooth damages and decay. The difference between these kind of restoration and tooth fillings consists in the application process; fillings are moulded directly on a tooth during a dental visit while inlays and onlays are fabricated in a lab just to be applied to the damaged part of tooth during a second visit.

An inlay is used when the damage affects the central past of the tooth; an onlay covers a more extended surface which includes all or most of the biting parts of a tooth.

Among the benefits that inlays and onlays grant to a patient, we include the following:
  • inlays and onlays preserve the tooth in a much better way than a filling or a crown
  • discolouration of inlays and onlays is less likely than when a tooth coloured resin filling is applied
  • it’s easier to clean the tooth in comparison to a capped one
  • an inlay is a better choice than any other alternative if you have a cavity between your teeth as it keeps out bacteria more efficiently
  • inlays and onlays grant better stability, strength and color than a filling

The procedure of applying an inlay or onlay is carried out during 2 dental visits. During the first dental visit, the dentist will proceed to prepare your tooth and will send a moulded impression of your tooth to a lab in order for the inlay/onlay to be fabricated. Your dentist will also help you to choose the right type of material to be used in the lab; depending on the tooth you’re about to cover with an inlay or only, the choice is to be made between metal, resin or porcelain material.

Once the tooth is prepared, the dentist will apply a temporary material to cover the damaged part of the tooth. This temporary inlay or onlay will be removed and replaced with the permanent one during the second visit.
