Red wine protects your teeth
Many of you probably know that red wine has always been tagged as very healthy for the heart, if consumed in small doses. What you might not know is that a new study suggests that red wine has benefits for your dental health as well. According to an article published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, drinking red wine may strengthen your teeth’s defences against bacteria. There are many species of microbes living in our mouth and because our teeth have non-shedding surfaces, these microbes adhere to it and in time, form a biofilm that can cause dental infections. This biofilm is dental plaque. The various bacteria in plaque produce acids which weaken teeth enamel; in time, these bacteria can lead do periodontitis, infections, teeth loss.

According to the scientific article published, red wine, when drank moderately, can prevent the multiplication of some bacteria in plaque, hence reducing the risks of infections. So the next time you’re having a glass of red wine you are doing something good for your teeth. On the other hand, keep in mind that red wine can stain your teeth in consequence of the dark colour pigments contained in this drink. There are many ways to prevent teeth discolouration and stains.

When you drink red wine or tea, coffee or any drink containing coffeine, make sure to wash your teeth afterwards. Professional teeth scaling is a must to keep your teeth white, shiny and plaque free. Many of you probably tried teeth whitening kits that can be purchased at any convenience store, or DIY recipes to be found on the internet. Bear in mind that some of these products may contain abrasive chemical formula which can seriously damage teeth enamel. Before applying and whitening products, we urge you to consult with your dentist or opt for a professional whitening and scaling treatment.

By removing plaque from your teeth surface you will be also getting rid of all bacteria and stains reducing the chance of cavities, gum disease and periodontal disease.
